THE ROYAL BROTHERHOOD OF SAINT MICHAEL - ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES |
Many times, when an individual is invited to accept membership as a Knight or Dame of the Royal Order, a question arises:
What Are the Obligations?
The Order today is a Dynastic Royal Decoration, a civil honor that requires that those Catholic individuals honored with the chivalric title, seek membership in a Diocesan Royal Brotherhood of the same Sovereign invocation for the personal sanctification of Confreres who accept a spiritual and temporal responsibility, first, of a devotional nature with a daily prayer to Saint Michael, the Archangel, traditionally regarded as Angel of Portugal and of Peace and second, of a social and charitable nature, to contribute to the social works of the Diocesan Royal Brotherhoods and Charities of the Royal House of Portugal.
Members of the Order have been given a two-fold modern day mission of fostering the practice of the Christian life in the modern world and the preservation of the faith in modern day society. In an unbelieving world, Members the Royal Brotherhood express and protect the very idea of what it means to follow Christ. This is accomplished by prayer, service and alms giving.
There is a fixed honorarium stipulated by each Diocese as a donated made by each Confrere (Knight and Dame) at the time of investiture or promotion within the Order.
In addition, members are asked to make an Annual Contribution by way of an Oblation in support of the charity programs designated by the Bishop. The amount of the contribution is set by Board of the Royal Brotherhood and approved by the Diocese.
