THE ROYAL BROTHERHOOD OF SAINT MICHAEL - ARCHDIOCESE FOR THE MILITARY SERVICES |
Knighthood in the modern world seems to be a contradiction in terms, but there has never been a greater need for the ideals and goals of true Christian Chivalry than today. The Royal Order and Brotherhood of Saint Michael of the Wing stands between two worlds, the ancient and the modern. The ancient provides a standing and basis for our actions in the modern. Christian Chivalry and piety provide the tools necessary for the struggle of Catholics in the modern world. We are called to be “in the world,” but not “of the world.”
Why Me?
Many times when an individual is invited to accept membership as a Knight or Dame of the Royal Order, a question arise: Why have I been selected for this honor?
Selection occurs because of meritorious service to the Church, to the community and to one’s fellow man. Many times such meritorious service isn’t obvious to the individual, but, indeed, the extraordinary often flows from the ordinary. This honor comes to you as a distinguished Catholic of demonstrated fidelity, notable accomplishments, and readiness to serve the Church.
Who Are Members?
Membership in the order may be bestowed upon Catholics of any citizenship for recognized outstanding contributions to Portuguese Royal Charities or for the spread of devotion to Saint Michael, traditionally venerated as Angel of Portugal and Angel of Peace.
What Membership Really Means
Anyone present today at an Investiture Ceremony of the Knights and Dames of the Royal Order is profoundly moved and uplifted and left with the impression that time has stopped in the year 1100. The ceremonies often take place in ancient abbeys and imposing cathedrals and follow a ritual which has scarcely altered throughout the centuries.
The Process for Joining the Order
A prospective member discusses the Order with a current member and submits a petition if there is further interest. A fully completed petition is required for review. All decisions will be communicated to the applicant. Newly accepted members will remain Postulants until they are formally brought into the Order at an Investiture (or an approved event with the Grand Master or Judge of the Order).
